U.S. families receive several important federal benefits in August 2026, including monthly Social Security family payments, VA survivor compensation and meaningful progress in the August 2026 Visa Bulletin for family-sponsored green card applicants.
Spouses and children of retired or disabled workers may qualify for monthly auxiliary benefits based on the worker’s earnings record. These amounts are adjusted each year under the 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA).
Total household payments are limited by the Social Security family maximum. For workers who reach age 62 or die before 62 in 2026, the family-maximum formula uses bend points of $1,643, $2,371 and $3,093. The combined benefit for a worker, spouse and children generally cannot exceed about 150%–180% of the worker’s primary insurance amount.
The August 2026 Visa Bulletin shows forward movement in several family-preference categories:
F1 (unmarried sons and daughters of U.S. citizens): advanced roughly 5–10 months for many countries.
F2A (spouses and unmarried children under 21 of green-card holders): remains “Current” for most chargeability areas, allowing eligible applicants to file without a cutoff-date wait.
F4 (siblings of U.S. citizens): moved forward by several months in some regions.
USCIS confirmed that applicants may use the Dates for Filing chart for family-sponsored adjustment-of-status applications in August, meaning some people can submit their green card paperwork earlier than the final-action dates would suggest.
Qualifying surviving spouses and dependent children of service members continue to receive Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The 2026 base DIC rate for an eligible surviving spouse is $1,699.36 per month, tax-free. Additional amounts may be added for:
Dependent children.
Need for aid and attendance or housebound status.
Certain transitional or long-term disability provisions.
Families can check current rates and eligibility rules on the VA survivor benefits page.
