YouTube Is Bigger Than Spotify and Apple for Podcasts, Here's to Know Why

When you think about podcasts, Spotify or Apple Podcasts might be the first platforms that come to mind.

However, a surprising player has emerged as the top choice for podcast listeners in the U.S.: YouTube.

According to Edison Podcast Metrics, a firm tracking podcast trends, YouTube has outpaced its rivals to become the go-to platform for weekly podcast fans.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Edison’s recent data reveals that 31% of weekly podcast listeners aged 13 and older prefer YouTube for podcasts.

This beats Spotify, chosen by 27%, and Apple Podcasts, which 15% of listeners favor.

“A few years ago, YouTube might have seemed like an unlikely platform for podcasts. But as the world of podcasting evolves, many podcasters have embraced video podcasting, recording their shows in both audio and video formats,” Edison noted in its October write-up.

Why YouTube Is Winning

YouTube’s dominance isn’t just about audio—it’s about creating an interactive experience.

  • Visual Context: Younger audiences, especially Gen Z, say video helps them understand topics better by adding facial expressions and gestures.
  • Stronger Connection: Nearly 45% of Gen Z podcast fans say they feel closer to podcasters who incorporate video.
  • Dynamic Content: Podcast creators are increasingly using video to engage their audience, offering both visual and audio formats for their shows.

This shift aligns with changing content consumption habits, where visuals and audio complement each other to provide a richer experience.

Why This Matters for Podcasting

YouTube’s ascent as the top podcast platform reflects a major shift in how people engage with content. Video podcasting not only expands the medium’s reach but also enhances audience engagement by offering more ways to interact with content.

For creators, the message is clear: Video is no longer optional—it’s a game-changer.
